Your Step-by-Step Guide to the ITV in Spain
Everything you need to know to pass your vehicle's technical inspection, explained for non-Spanish speakers.
The ITV (Inspección Técnica de Vehículos) is the mandatory technical vehicle inspection in Spain. It ensures that all vehicles on the road meet a minimum level of safety and environmental standards.
Passing the ITV is a legal requirement for all vehicles older than four years. Driving with an expired ITV can result in fines and is essential for:
- Renewing your car insurance.
- Selling your vehicle.
- Ensuring your car is safe to drive.
- Avoiding legal penalties.
Vehicle Documentation (Ficha Técnica & Permiso de Circulación)
You must bring the original "Ficha Técnica" (technical inspection card) and the "Permiso de Circulación" (vehicle registration document). These are the two most important documents for your car.
Proof of Insurance
You must have valid insurance for your vehicle. While they can often check this electronically, it's always a good idea to bring the latest payment receipt with you just in case.
Your Vehicle
It sounds obvious, but make sure your car is in good condition. Check your lights, tires, brakes, and wipers before the appointment to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
The appointment takes place at an official ITV station. You will be directed to drive your car through a series of inspection lines.
During the inspection, technicians will check your car's lights, emissions, brakes, suspension, tires, and overall safety features. You will be asked to perform actions like turning on your lights or pressing the brake pedal. The entire process usually takes about 20-30 minutes.
Be Prepared
If your vehicle passes, you will receive a sticker to place on your windscreen and an updated "Ficha Técnica".
If your vehicle fails, you will be given a report detailing the issues. You will have a set period (usually around 2 months) to fix the problems and return for a re-inspection.
